ABOUT

THE BARRIER BREAKERS STORY

Barrier Breakers began as a simple invitation to conversation and quickly grew into a ministry of The Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina, aiming to amplify voices of color throughout WNC. Barrier Breakers: The Pilgrimage was born as an opportunity to focus on the historically black parishes that exist or existed in the diocese, to recognize the stories that took place on the land we call home. Through a series of interviews, parish visits, and most importantly conversations, stories have been collected and we are all invited to listen, reflect, and continue learning.

Created in February of 2021, Barrier Breakers, began as a series of four videos, sharing stories of people of color during Black History Month. In August of that year, Barrier Breakers returned as a monthly series, each month featuring the story of a person of color in the diocese, a "Barrier Breaker." Many of the stories shared in the creation of the Barrier Breakers series contributed to the stories you will find as part of this pilgrimage.
